Casa del Carbonaio

The house is located in the old town of Locorotondo and at the beginning of the XX century is was used to produce charcoal slack. It derived from almond hulls and small wood working scraps, that went through a pre-combustion phase. Then charcoal slack was put out in specially provided containers (called “fucagne”) and sold to the inhabitants of the old town in order to feed their warming pans. The house remained the same for several years, afterwards it was used to produce the lime, which was sold to whitewash the walls of the cummerse in the old town. Later it was transformed into a beautiful residence, taking care of preserving peculiar details of the structure such as star vaults and barrel vaults, solid wood frames and furnishings, the wrought iron winding staircase, that climbs up from the cellar (ancient well and water supply) to the kitchen. The house is situated down one of the most enchanting, peaceful and picturesque alleys in the historical centre. It can accommodate up to 3 guests, it is composed of an alcove bedroom, 2 bathrooms and a very spacious kitchen area.
